Medialon displayed its wizardry
behind the scenes at L’Atelier Renault du Magicien, a
temporary exhibition in which visitors discovered the
wonders of the new Renault model automobile in a magical setting. It ran from November 11, 2007 to
January 6, 2008 at the French automaker’s Atelier
Renault showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris.
Medialon Manager Lite controlled and synchronized the
audio, lighting and levitation machine used in the show
which was developed in collaboration with celebrity
conjurer Stephan Leyshon, the mastermind behind the
“Magicians’ Secrets” programs on French television.
L’Atelier Renault du Magicien enabled visitors big and
small to get some hands-on magic experience thanks to
astonishing boxes and amazing tables which allowed them
to defy the law of gravity, make things appear and
disappear, perform levitations, change color, and move
through walls.
The highlight of the show was an illusion in which
Leyshon levitated the new Renault Twingo. Video of
Leyshon’s hands was displayed on a screen behind the car
and synchronized with the levitation machine, lighting
and sound giving the impression that the Twingo rose
into the air gliding and frolicking in response to the
magician’s coaxing. Mecamagic, where Jean-Pierre Benoit
is technical manager, developed the levitating Twingo
illusion at Leyshon’s request.
For Medialon, “the challenge was to synchronize all the
show’s equipment so it could be easily and flexibly
encoded although the show appears to be very complex in
its execution,” says Julien Ribes from ARTABASE who
helped with the Medialon programming.
Medialon controlled a Hog 1000 lighting console and
Christie 20K projector for the exhibition. Media was
synchronized with audio and lighting via MIDI time code.
Medialon also piloted the opening of a trunk for one of
the illusions.
During the run of L’Atelier du Magicien 6,247 shows were
put on for thousands of visitors. The Atelier Renault
space is capable of hosting up to 2,000 people a day; it
serves as a direct link between the Renault brand and
the public.
