Integrated by FUNA, a German large-scale project
experienced company, Medialon offers a full AV devices
control system in the “Solstice Theatre” on the
newly-built “Celebrity Solstice” cruise ship.
Being the first on five to be built,
“Celebrity Solstice” cruise ship is currently the
biggest one ever built in Germany with a
capacity of 2,850 guests (1,425 Cabins) and more than
1,250 crew members. The cruise ship operates in the
Caribbean from Miami, Florida, USA.
The Medialon show and media control system is integrated
in the “Solstice Theatre”, the 1,000 seats capacity
theatre located on the cruise ship. During a cruise the
venue is used for various night time live shows with -or
without- live music, dancers and performers. The theatre
is also used for crew training, cruise drill, business
events and large scale video events such as Super Bowl
(American Football Final).
Sound system
The “Solstice Theatre” has a big sound system with three
clusters and various delay lines. The sound pit, located
in the centre of the theatre, houses a big mixing
system, various effects processors, hard disc playback
systems, wireless microphone receivers, CD players, etc.
Lighting system
The lighting system features classical theatrical
lighting as well as HMI moving lights, follow spots, fog
machines and digital moving lights, all connected
through an Ethernet-based lighting control distribution
system. The lighting console is housed in the main
control booth.
Video system
The main control booth of the “Solstice Theatre” also
houses the video and show control system operator’s
devices. The video system is a collection of analog and
digital sources (disc, HDD and tape-based video players,
PTZ Cameras, etc.). The sources are all transcoded to SD-SDI
and can be sent through an SDI matrix switcher to two
103” Plasma screens (located on the left and right of
the stage), to various preview monitors in the control
booth and to a 12,000 ANSI lumen LCD projector,
integrated in the theatre’s balcony and used for various
front projection purposes on the stage. There are also
SDI video tie-lines coming from and going to the
broadcast center so that - for example - satellite video
feeds can be shown in the theatre if wanted (used for
Super Bowl broadcast for instance).
Medialon Show Control system
The Medialon show control system includes one Medialon
Manager V5 Pro license, one Medialon Show Control
Machine, three Medialon Manager PANEL software and three
Rugboards (touch screen PCs).
The show control system has been designed to be able to
control any of the sound, video or lighting systems. The
lighting console is connected to Medialon Manager via
MIDI and timecode. The sound system is connected via
timecode, serial control and MIDI, the video system uses
serial and IR control.
As cable distance was an issue in the theatre, all
serial, MIDI and IR interfaces are Ethernet-based so
that the Medialon Show Control Machine only houses the
Medialon Manager software and a timecode board which is
connected to a timecode patch bay housed in the sound
pit.
The role of the Medialon system is to be the main
control system for the entire “Solstice Theatre”. As
well as functioning as a timeline-based system, it is
also a general touch panel-based control system. As
shows and use of the venue change over time, FUNA -
thanks to Medialon Manager’s ability to create friendly-user
interface-, has designed a basic show control
programming, so that the client and/or the client’s
production company could easily start creating dedicated
shows adapted to their current needs.
Medialon controls the following equipment:
- Video Tape Recorders (DVC Pro and HDV)
- DVD Recorders
- BD/HD-DVD Players
- HDD Video Players
- Video Matrix Switchers (SDI, RGBHV and Audio)
- 2x 103” Plasma screens
- 12,000 ANSI lumen video projector
- Lighting Console
- Sound Mixer
- CD Recorder
- Audio Effects Processors
- HDD Audio Players
- Digital Audio Network
- Rigging System (through Timecode)
“The main challenge was to get the system running up in
time during rehearsals in the theatre. As always on a
new cruise ship, the programming and commissioning time
was pretty short but it ended up being a successful
approach for all participants”, declares Ingo Jakobs,
Project Engineer Entertainment Systems from FUNA.
FUNA supplied the design, engineering, workshop work,
onboard installation and commissioning of all lighting,
effects, video, sound and control systems in the
“Solstice Theatre” as well as the entertainment systems
for all the other public venues on board, the
architectural lighting systems, and various security
communication systems on board.
