Medialon Manager controlled the
extensive lighting, audio and video aspects of one New
York City’s most high-profile seasonal attractions, The
Grand Central Kaleidoscope holiday light show which ran
in the Main Concourse of Grand Central Station from
December 1 to New Year’s Day. The show was created by
Artlumiere, a production company specializing in
creating spectacular lighting effects for important
buildings around the world.
Two networked Medialon Managers, installed by Scharff
Weisberg on the northeast balcony in the Main Concourse,
synchronized all the audio and visual components of the
extravaganza which dazzled and delighted commuters,
holiday travelers, shoppers, diners and visitors to the
landmark train station which has been restored to its
full glory.
The Grand Central Kaleidoscope was the first major show
in New York City for Artlumiere. Artists Friedrich
Foerster and Sabine Weissinger, together known as Casa
Magica, worked with Artlumiere to design an extravaganza
expressing the freedom of color and the discipline of
symmetry.
The artists’ digital photos of Grand Central Station and
other New York City icons were used as a template to
create unique designs projected onto the interior walls
of the Main Concourse using special, high-powered
projectors from Paris-based Hardware Xenon. The
artistically-manipulated images aligned with the
architecture in a seven-minute show accompanied by
synchronized lighting and music. The spectacular was
performed at the top and the bottom of the hour each day
from 11 am to 9 pm.
Among the equipment controlled by Medialon Manager was
eight Hardware Xenon 7000W OLS projectors using the
powerful xenon lamp to offer a massive output of 70,000
lumens; a complement of VARI*LITE 3000 moving lights;
and Meyer CQ-1 and UPA-1P. Medialon’s role at the heart
of the system ensured that the holiday show made a
memorable impression on everyone who saw it. |
