Scharff Weisberg supplied Snug Harbor Productions with a
custom video projection system for the stage of the
critically acclaimed new musical, Harlem Song which
premiered at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater. The company
combined six NEC Nighthawk projectors, a Dataton
Watchout System and a Medialon Show Controller to create
a montage of continuously moving video imagery onto
moving projection screens.
For the first time in its 89-year history, the
world-famous Apollo Theater presented a long-running
production. Harlem Song, a new musical written and
directed by acclaimed playwright/director/producer
George C. Wolfe, opened on August 5th, showcasing the
extraordinary music and spirit that has characterized
Harlem from the 1920's to the present. Still images of
Harlem’s famous people and places and video interviews
appeared on two screens which move across the back of
the stage. Snug Harbor Productions was the general
manager for the show. Batwin + Robin Productions
produced the visual imagery.
All of the video sequences were created with the camera
on its side for the unusual vertical orientation. The
video was then rotated in AfterEffects and fed into
Watchout which rendered the pans. The master show
control system was Medialon Show Controller which
synchronized the Watchout cues with the movement of the
screens, cued the projector shutters, and handled
switching between primary and backup systems. |
