On December 19th, 2004, the Tropical Islands Resort opened its doors to visitors. Located sixty kilometers from Berlin , the 60.000 square meter indoor park offers tropical temperatures, a jungle with exotic plants, a faux tropical sea with natural beach, a lagoon for swimming, a tropical village and many more attractions that reflect equatorial lifestyle.

Behind the tropical sea, the world’s largest rear projection box has been installed by AVE Audiovisual Equipment Verhengengsten (based in Hannover , Berlin , Cologne and Munich ) as an artificial horizon. The screen covers a width of 160 meters and a height of 20 meters . Dozens of show lights create blue skies, sun, moon and clouds. The projection runs 24/7, as the park never closes.

Every night, an elaborate dance/show is performed on two islands in the tropical sea. A true multimedia event, the show includes two waterscreen video projections, a show laser, moving lights and video projection on the rear screen. DVD players, video mixers, seamless switchers and PC´s for still image projection for the event are all controlled by Medialon Manager.

Behind the scenes, Medialon Manager also takes care of the automation for the changing light moods. Two automated audio desks are controlled to provide correct routing and level for the various events happening on the beach (swimming events, beach parties, etc.). The Manager system also has an interface to the houselights controlled by the European Installation Bus EIB.

The entire installation was planned, delivered and installed by AVE and their partners. “Our philosophy was to have most of the standard procedures automated, but maintain high flexibility when requirements change,” states Klemens Jakob, managing director at AVE. “We provide an intuitive user interface that simplifies complex operations behind the scenes to one mouseclick.”

For the automation system, AVE employed Jens Oellrich from Jo Control as their planning and programming expert. The decision for Medialon was made because of the ethernet capability and show programming features like positracking timelines.

Oellrich added, “In combination with Moxa com servers and serial-to-midi converters, Medialon Manager provides a robust and flexible solution for distributed control systems.”
